Display Year Over Year Results in a Column Chart

Comparing the results of two years of data is easily possible by enabling comparisons for a widget. Though, a popular data display is to show the YoY results for more than two years in a column chart. This article will outline the steps to create a column chart to show YoY results for more than two years.

Data Source Requirements

The data source that you want to create this view for must (in addition to data stretching the entire span that you want to display) have the following dimensions:

  • Date
  • Month of Year
  • Year

📘

If your data source doesn't contain all of these dimensions a google sheet with the required dimensions and the data you want to display can be easily filled out and mapped for this purpose. More info on Google Sheets here!

Dimensions

In order to specifically display a set of columns for each month of the year, and so each year of time in the display has its own column in each set, you must add two dimensions to the widget and they must be in this order:

  • Month of Year
  • Year

Date Range & Sorting

The Date Range for the widget must be set from the beginning of the first year you want to display up until the last date of the final year you want to display

📘

If you use the relative date range selection window, and set the ending of the date range to be yesterday, your YoY column chart will progress with each progressive report you produce.

In order to have your column chart display the most recent year to furthest out year in each column set per month, sort your widget by year the select "Descending"
