Template Builder Troubleshooting: Common Issues

Overview

This article collects common Template Builder issues and their resolutions in one place. If you are experiencing an issue not listed here, see Troubleshooting Zero Values in Reports and Dashboards for data-related issues, or contact NinjaCat Support for additional help.

Why a widget shows an error or no data: metric/dimension compatibility

In the Widget Builder's data-settings panel, NinjaCat validates metric and dimension compatibility as you build. Fields that would be incompatible with your current selection don't appear as options in the metric/dimension picker. If a selection becomes incompatible — for example after you change the widget's data source — the affected field is flagged inline with an "Incompatible with selection" indicator, and the widget preview shows an "Improperly Configured Settings" message and stops loading data until you resolve it. (Custom-formula fields show "Formula contains incompatible items.")

Incompatibility is determined per data source: certain metrics can't be broken down by certain dimensions because the source's API doesn't support that combination (for example, a Google Ads Impression Share metric that can't be segmented by particular ad-group-level dimensions). This is a within-channel rule, not a restriction on mixing channels.

What to do when you see a compatibility error:

  1. Review the metrics and dimensions currently selected in the widget.
  2. Remove or replace the field(s) flagged as incompatible.
  3. Choose fields that are supported together for the data source you're reporting on.
  4. Re-run the widget once the flagged combination is resolved.

Blank Pages in Exported PDFs

Symptom

When exporting or printing a report from the Template Builder as a PDF, the output contains one or more unexpected blank pages.

Cause

An off-screen element in the report layout was being picked up by the browser's print engine during export, causing it to insert empty pages into the generated PDF.

Status: Resolved

This issue has been resolved. If you are still seeing blank pages in exported PDFs:

  1. Clear your browser cache and reload NinjaCat, then re-export the report.
  2. Confirm you are on the latest version of NinjaCat — if your organization uses a self-managed deployment, ensure it has been updated.
  3. If blank pages persist after completing the steps above, contact NinjaCat Support with the report name, the template it uses, and a sample of the affected PDF export.
